Each year between Thanksgiving and New Years we throw away 25% more waste - which means 25% more stuff polluting our environment, filling up our landfills or combusting into the atmosphere. There is no “AWAY”. This year, we encourage you to REVERSE the trend by giving and living mindfully during the holidays. A simple way to practice this is to source gifts that matter- and wrap them with repurposed and natural materials- like that old newspaper or magazine collecting dust on your coffee table!

Here’s our tips on how to give- and wrap- responsibly:

'Tis The Season To Donate We encourage you to donate to a nonprofit on behalf of a loved one this holiday season. Not only is it a great zero-waste way to give, your donation will carry out the crucial work these nonprofits do to protect the places we all love. Below are some of our nonprofit partners fighting to protect our oceans:

Save the Waves Protects coastal ecosystems around the world in partnership with local communities

Surfrider Foundation Dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of the world’s oceans, waves, and beaches.

5 Gyres Empowers action against the global health crisis of plastic pollution through science, art, education, and adventure

Kokua Hawaii Foundation Supports garden and environmental education in schools across the Hawaiian islands.

Algalita Connecting young people with scientists, experts, politicians and businesses to have real conversations about plastic consumption.

Gift The Untangle Pack featuring your choice of Costa sunglasses from the Untangled Collection, the new Bureo Insulated Kanteen and a set of Bamboo Utensils. All working to prevent plastic pollution in our oceans!

Gift Reusables The top items found at beach cleanups are single-use plastics. Plastic, a material designed to last forever, should not be used to produce throw-away products. Our friend Lauren Singer opened up The Package Free Shop to make zero waste living more accessible. Check out all the single-use plastic alternatives they have and give the gift of a cleaner ocean!

Gift Responsibly  Take into consideration both social and environmental impacts when buying presents for loved ones. Support businesses that are transparent with their supply chain. Be sure to look deeper than what is advertised on tags. Phrases like “eco friendly” and “green” can sometimes be misleading. Rather, look for third party certifications like fair trade, B Corp certified and products made from recycled materials. Consciously consuming is one of the best things you can do for our planet. Even better, gift vintage, second-hand or experiences rather than material possessions.

Natural Wrapping Paper Wrapping paper is expensive and is usually lamented with a plastic coating. Opt for recycled paper, newspaper, old fabric or reusable bags. Think simply about how to wrap your gifts. Ditch the plastic ribbons and use twine or string instead. Less is more- get creative! Check out the Kokua Hawaii Foundations Simplify the Holidays guide for tips on how to wrap gifts with old cereal boxes.
